Overview of EMA Students Scholarship

EMA Students Scholarship 2024-2025, is open to a maximum of 90 candidates from EU and non-EU countries.

The European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (EMA) is a one-year post-graduate course offered by the Global Campus of Human Rights. This programme takes a multidisciplinary approach, integrating legal, political, historical, anthropological, and philosophical perspectives on human rights and democratisation.

EMA STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIP is a collaborative effort involving 43 participating universities from all EU Member States, collectively managed by the Global Campus of Human Rights. The University of Padua, Italy, serves as the university of first enrolment within this consortium.

Students enrolled in EMA STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIP benefit from instruction delivered by esteemed academics representing participating universities, as well as experts and representatives from international organizations such as the European Union, the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), along with various non-governmental organizations (NGOs). This diverse academic environment fosters a multicultural learning experience, enriching students’ understanding of human rights and democratisation on a global scale.

Content of the EMA STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIP program

The academic year of the European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation comprises two semesters: the first semester (September to February) held in Venice-Lido, and the second semester (February to July) hosted at an EMA participating university within the European Union, UK, or Switzerland. During the second semester, students engage in a university exchange, attending activities at a university located in a country other than their home country.

The EMA Programme offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, skill-building sessions, and individual research. The first semester curriculum is structured into two main components: the core programme and second stream activities.

The core programme, known as the first stream, covers thematic sections that cater to the entire student cohort. These thematic sections include:

Human Rights Institutions, Mechanisms, and Standards (covering various international bodies such as the United Nations, Council of Europe, European Union, etc.)
Globalisation, Development, and Human Rights
Historical, Philosophical, Religious, and Anthropological Perspectives on Human Rights
Building and Protecting Democracy
Human Rights, Peace, and Security, which includes a field trip component (e.g., humanitarian law, international criminal law, security issues, field missions, etc.). For the academic year 2024/2025, the field trip destination is Kosovo.

The second stream activities consist of various components, including a series of Cluster classes that focus on specialized topics related to human rights and democratisation. These classes are designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge and skills in specific areas of interest within the field.

The core programme, known as the first stream, covers thematic sections that cater to the entire student cohort. These thematic sections include:

During the EMA STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIP second semester, students relocate to one of the 43 participating universities
to follow courses in an area of specialisation of their own choice and to undertake personal
supervised research for their master‘s thesis.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR EMA STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIP 2024-2025

EMA accepts a maximum of 90 candidates from both EU and non-EU countries. To be eligible for the programme, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

Possess at least a three-year university degree equivalent to 180 ECTS credits.

Demonstrate a certified proficiency in English, at least at level B2. Accepted English proficiency certificates include IELTS (minimum score of 6), TOEFL (minimum score of 80 for the IBT), and Cambridge exams (minimum score of 160-172).obtained no more than 3 years before the start of the Programme.

2. Applicants completing the degree entry requirements subsequent to the application deadline are allowed to apply for the Programme and might be admitted with reserve. For students completing their degree during the year of application, eventual admission into the Programme will be conditional upon documentation of completed degree qualification within one day of the start of the Programme. Students still enrolled in a university course might be admitted under the following conditions: a) that the qualification to be obtained at the end of the first enrolment course does not constitute the qualification access to the EMA Programme.

Selection criteria and process of EMA STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIP 2024-2025 An ad hoc Selection Committee, comprised of EMA National Directors from every EU country and the EMA academic team, will conduct applicant selection.
1. The selection process includes evaluating applicants’ qualifications and, if deemed relevant, conducting telephone or online interviews.
2. The Committee will assign up to 30 points to applicants based on specific criteria:
– University final grade (scale: 6 to 10)
– Relevance of degree and thesis subject (scale: 1 to 5)
– Additional academic work/courses/publications (scale: 1 to 5)
– Practical experience (scale: 1 to 5)
– Motivation (scale: 1 to 5)
3. Applicants must score a minimum of 20/30 points to be eligible for the Programme.
4. Eligible applicants will be contacted for admission in accordance with their ranking.

Ans: EMA STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIP is primarily financed by the European Union* through the Global Campus of Human Rights.
