This article will explain everything you need to know about the Morehead Cain scholarship program, including the Eligibility requirements, application deadline, and how to apply.
About Morehead-Cain Scholarship
The Morehead-Cain Scholarship is one of the oldest and most prestigious merit-based scholarship programs in the United States. It was founded in 1951 at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Originally known as the Morehead Scholarship, it was later renamed in honor of its original patrons, John Motley Morehead III and the Gordon and Mary Cain Foundation.
This scholarship covers all expenses for a student’s four-year undergraduate education at UNC, including tuition, housing, and other costs. It also provides funding for independent research, internships, international study, and fully funded summer enrichment programs. Mary Cain, a significant donor to the program, once called it “the gold standard in undergraduate educational opportunities.”
The Morehead-Cain Foundation seeks applicants who demonstrate leadership qualities, the ability to inspire others, and a commitment to making a positive impact. They value traits such as courage, humility, integrity, and perseverance, as well as a genuine love for learning and sharing knowledge with others.
Importantly, the foundation does not tolerate any form of discrimination based on factors such as race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or disability. This means that the scholarship is open to everyone, including international students. All applicants who meet the scholarship criteria will be considered for the award.
